Its main development activities include:
- Developing donor guidelines for supporting microinsurance
- Document case studies of insurance products and delivery models
- Commission research on key issues such as the regulatory environment for microinsurance
- Supporting innovation that will expand the availability of appropriate microinsurance products
- Propose performance indicators for microinsurance
Furthermore, the Working Group coordinates:

- The Microinsurance Focus website
The CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance was set up in 2002. Its members are representatives from donor organisations, multilateral agencies, private insurance companies and other interested parties that are involved in the promotion and support of microinsurance in developing countries. From 16 members in 2002, the Group has grown to over 80 members in 2008, who meet once a year to discuss current issues and upcoming activities.
The CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance is organised in several sub-groups to allow in-depth work on specific topics and issues. They meet as often as necessary with regards to planned activities.

- Agriculture Sub-Group
Focuses on agricultural insurance issues in developing countries

Responds to the increased need for capacity building through compiling and developing training materials and programmes striving towards coherent basic quality standards of microinsurance capacity

Facilitates microinsurance experience and information sharing across the industry, including MFIs, insurance companies, donors and experts as to promote sound practices in the industry

Works on the specific aspects of health microinsurance, its role in the social protection network and its relation with health providers. It also develops tools to monitor the performance and impact of health microinsurance on clients and providers

Based on the real value for the poor discussion, this sub-group focuses on the impact of microinsurance on the client, especially in terms of financial protection
